I suppose most of us never think about what would happen if hurricane-force winds caught the blades of a massive wind turbine — say, in Scotland — and spun them around with such force that the engine catches fire.

well, here I thought my imagination was a bit too vivid.
Seems like it actually DOES happen.
It does happen indeed, but it’s very rare. Such turbines are programmed in a way that the blades are pitched out of the wind when it is too strong and they sort of lock. So if the turbine was built correctly nothing should happen.
